Irons have a trapezoidal clubhead, which is either cast or – in very high-quality irons – forged. In terms of design, there are blades as well as cavity backs and muscle backs. Blades provide excellent feedback on mishits but are difficult to play due to their structural features, so they are predominantly used by players with low handicaps.
Cavity and muscle backs are more forgiving due to their larger clubface and special weighting. Golf balls struck with them that are not hit dead center still fly far and relatively straight.
There are irons available in various lengths and designs. Besides individual irons, iron sets are primarily offered today. These are tried-and-tested combinations of different irons for various purposes. A standard iron set consists of irons 3 through 9 (the higher the number, the greater the loft and the shorter the shaft length). An iron set is always more cost-effective than assembling individual irons.
