All golf balls are round, but very different in detail

"How are golf balls supposed to be so different from one another?" A question that many golf beginners ask. Those in the know know that the differences can be immense. For casual recreational play, it is not so important which ball is used. Often enough, during training or on the golf course, you use the ones you find or have with you. For ambitious players who want to improve their handicap and even more so for professionals, the situation is quite different. This is because ball types and ball brands vary greatly in terms of texture, flight characteristics and range of use. Depending on the style of play, swing speed and club type, different ball types are therefore used sooner or later in order to always achieve the best result. In the following sections, you can read about the different types of golf balls and what you should look out for...

An overview of all golf ball types

Golf balls differ greatly in terms of material and structure. With one exception, they consist of a plastic shell of varying hardness and a ball core made of hard rubber or composite materials. There are four groups of ball types.

1-piece ball: The cheapest ball variant, which consists of only one material. There is therefore no differentiation between the shell and core. The 1-piece ball is mainly used as a training ball on the driving range. It is hardly suitable for playing, as it deforms very quickly, resulting in a loss of distance and precision.

2-piece ball: The most common among recreational golfers, this ball consists of two layers - a hard core, usually made of synthetic resin, and a softer outer shell made of plastic. It can be used to achieve quite high distances without much effort. It is also robust and inexpensive.

3-Piece-Ball: This ball is more expensive than the two-layer version, but offers hobby golfers few advantages. It usually consists of two hard cores surrounded by an outer shell. As it offers more feedback and slightly better spin values than the 2-piece ball, it is more likely to be played by advanced players.

Multi-layer ball: The multi-layer ball is the highest quality golf ball and has four to six layers. It has the best spin values, achieves high speeds and is easy to control. This type of ball is preferred by professionals and ambitious amateurs. It is expensive due to its complex structure.

The most important properties of the golf ball

Compression: Depending on its structure, a golf ball deforms to varying degrees when hit. This is known as compression. It is measured on a scale from 0 to 200. The lower the value, the higher the compression and the softer the feel. A high value describes a low  compression and therefore a hard ball.

Spin behavior: The rotation of the golf ball is referred to as spin. In addition to the golf club and playing style, the ball used has a major influence on the spin behavior. The lower the spin value, the further the ball rolls. With a high spin value, it rolls only slightly or even develops a backward spin.

Trajectory: The aerodynamics vary greatly depending on the type of ball. In addition to the spin, the outer dimples determine how high the air resistance is, which affects the take-off angle and trajectory. The higher the air resistance, the higher the trajectory, while a low air resistance leads to a flat trajectory.

The most important golf ball accessories

Golf tees: Small sticks made of wood or plastic on whose plate-shaped resting surface the golf ball is placed for the tee shot.

Pitch fork: A fork-like tool used to repair the dent (pitch mark) on the green caused by the ball impact.

Ball retriever: A telescopically extendable rod that can be used to retrieve golf balls from water hazards or areas that are difficult to access safely and with little effort.

Ball marker: This small metal or plastic element is used to pick up your own ball and mark its position until the next shot, so that the next player in the round is not disturbed by balls lying around.
