Golf Wedge – Precise Tool for Short Distances

What is a wedge used for, when is it used, and what makes a good wedge?

Wedges are frequently used for short distances under 100 meters, especially for approach shots to the flag and in challenging lies. While they are constructed similarly to irons in most respects, wedges differ in their clubhead design, featuring a highly rounded shape and a significantly larger loft angle, which results in a steep launch angle.

The milled longitudinal grooves (grooves) on the clubface also play a crucial role in golf wedges. They impart a high spin to the golf ball, causing it to stop quickly upon landing. The material of the clubhead is softer than that of conventional irons, resulting in better feedback during the swing and increased accuracy.

There are four types of wedges: Pitching Wedge, Gap Wedge, Sand Wedge, and Lob Wedge. From the first to the last, the distances to be covered become shorter, and the launch angle becomes steeper.

The most important are the Pitching and Sand Wedges, which are frequently used to escape bunkers. The Pitching Wedge is also often used for approach shots to the green. On the other hand, the Lob Wedge is in demand when it comes to extremely short but high shots from the rough or similar lies, where the sharp edge of this variant can dig deep into the ground. The Gap Wedge is more of a specialty club, lying in terms of distance and launch angle between the Pitching and Sand Wedges. As the name suggests, it fills the gap (English: Gap) between the two.
